It was the custom to burn the Martyrs in this square. The following were probably burned at the stake here:

before 1538 Peke - some people say 1515 but I do not know of burnings then. Foxe says somewhat before 1538.

1555 Robert Samuel, Alice Driver and 3 others.

1556 Agnes Potten, Joan Trunchfield.

1558 Alexander Gooch.
